Overview
When flooding occurs on roadways, motorists can be faced with hydroplaning conditions that result in potential loss of control of their vehicles. Quixote Transportation Technologies, Inc. (QTT) makes it possible to detect hydroplaning conditions and inform motorists of the danger ahead with its IntelliZone Hydroplane Detection/Alert System.
Managing traffic flow during and after heavy rains typically means utilizing changeable message signs to alert motorists of an upcoming hazard. The Hydroplane Detection/Alert system detects high water and hydroplaning conditions by using sensors in the roadway. The system then transmits the data to the message signs, providing motorists with accurate, timely information so they can reduce their speed and increase their safety.
Features
- System reports surface water depth data from 0 to 0.5 inches
- Modular, scalable, flexible architecture can be easily modified to meet your project requirements
- Can be integrated with existing Road Weather Information System network
NTCIP compliant - Choose from a variety of communication methods to collect data
- Use static or variable message signs to display warnings to motorists
- Monitor the system from home or anywhere with Internet access
- Software capable of setting thresholds, monitoring and archiving data
- Over 36 years experience in transportation safety
How It Works
The IntelliZone Hydroplane Detection/Alert System consists of a Remote Processing Unit (RPU) and FP 2000® pavement sensors; Groundhog® traffic sensors may also be installed to monitor flow of traffic. The pavement and traffic sensors are located in target lanes of the roadway. The system is installed in areas prone to hydroplaning or wherever water level monitoring on roadways is required. The RPU collects and logs the data from the pavement and traffic sensors. IntelliZone software analyzes the data and, when conditions warrant, sends a message to static or portable message signs along the roadway. The message signs automatically update, in real time, to provide hazardous weather conditions and potential traffic congestion to motorists. The system operates autonomously using decision matrixes and algorithms to determine proper messaging for the signs.
Benefits
- Improves the safety of motorists
- Warns motorists of conditions ahead so they can slow their speed
- Potentially reduces accidents
